"TGE Group has delivered a number of efficient renewable heating schemes, working reliably alongside other contractors on site. Our main aim is to create highly desirable, comfortable, warm places for people to live in later life.  Based on strong environmental principles, TGE Group has helped us to create such places."

The Project

McCarthy & Stone is Britain’s leading developer of retirement property. Its award winning developments are constructed to achieve high quality living and building standards, including code for sustainable homes level 3. Reliable and comfortable heating is essential to residents and McCarthy & Stone contracted TGE Group to deliver high efficiency, renewable heating to four new developments in the South West and South Wales.

The Solution

In each of the four apartment developments ranging from 44 to 60 units, TGE conducted a technical survey followed by recommendations for renewable heat technology using Dimplex air source heat pumps and the installation of wet underfloor heating combined with electric underfloor heating for selected areas. Figures included potential heat loss for each system and efficiency over traditional heating systems.

The four district heat systems with combined underfloor heating were installed and commissioned in retirement properties in Basingstoke, Bristol and South Wales. The air source heat systems were designed to supply heating to all communal areas to maintain air temperatures of around 23⁰C in normal hours of room occupation, a level that would be appropriate in care homes.

Each system is centrally controlled and monitored on a 24/7 basis by TGE Group. The systems are also eligible for the Renewable Heat Incentive providing an income over 20 years based on all heat generated.

“Our heat engineers have been working with McCarthy & Stone for over five years, providing a range of air and ground source heat pump systems for their developments. We believe the repeat business is based on our ability to design efficient, reliable systems and deliver them on time and on budget.” Matthew Evans, Heat Director, TGE Group.

Energy Savings

The use of air source heat pumps over traditional electric panel heaters will bring an estimated saving of over 65%.
